Bacon's main criticism of the scholastics is that they spent all their time interpreting a few texts, such as the works of Aristotle and the scripture, in order to find the truth. He came up with a radical new approach that he thought would lead the way forward: looking at stuff. Long story short this became the basis for the scientific revolution.
